Why active travel?
To make Scotland’s transport system healthier and more sustainable, NHS Fife is committed to providing viable and sustainable travel options. Reducing the environmental impact of travel and transport within NHS Fife is of great importance and is something that needs to be addressed by staff, patients, visitors, suppliers and the wider community. To ensure that action is taken in this area, we are trying to increase access and provision of more sustainable, active travel throughout the health board.
Active travel is a journey with an element of being active: walking, cycling and wheeling of course, as well as using public transport, as this usually includes a walk or cycle too. Where possible, we want patients, visitors and staff to avoid using their car when accessing sites. This page outlines some of the ways you could incorporate active travel into your journeys. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach – the smallest changes will bring huge benefits to your overall health and the environment! Many local journeys could be far more pleasant and convenient if we do not take a car, and cycling for short trips can be just as quick as driving.
Bus
Cleaner, cheaper and quicker - taking the bus is another great way to travel to our sites!
We have put in screens outside Victoria Hospital which show updated bus times. At Queen Margaret Hospital and St Andrews Hospital, there are bus screens located in the reception areas that update automatically. Also, NHS staff currently get a 10% discount on travel with stagecoach.

Train
Travelling by train is another great alternative to using your car. The nearest station to Victoria Hospital is Kirkcaldy Railway station. The nearest railway station to both Queen Margaret Hospital and Lynebank Hospital is the Dunfermline Queen Margaret Train station. Many of our other smaller sites and health centres are also accessible by train.
For more information, Trainline provides details of tickets and timetables.
Cycling
Cycling is a great way to access sites that reduces emissions whilst getting outdoors and getting some exercise. At NHS Fife we have a range of resources in place to make cycling an easier option for you. There are several cycle storage areas (enclosed, covered, racks) located across NHS Fife sites which are available for use by staff, patients and visitors. You can see where these are located on the cycle storage information page.
For further information on how to access each of our main sites visit our hospitals and wards pages.
