The image registration, visualization and modeling features gives confirmation and confidence when navigating critical areas. The virtual endoscopy uses AI to provide a 3D endoscopic view of sinuses to visualize anatomy and pathology to allow preoperative plans to be improved.
NHS Fife is the first board in Scotland to use Medtronic StealthStation ENT which improves accuracy for many ENT surgeries.
David Walker, Clinical Lead for ENT & Audiology commented:
“A navigation system for sinuses is rapidly becoming the default state for sinus surgery. It allows instruments to be accurately positioned within the nose during surgery. This is important as the brain and eyes are very near to the nasal cavity and could easily be entered or damaged.
“This is a recognised potential complication of all sinus surgery and navigation helps to reduce this risk. It is particularly important in extremely diseased sinuses, where the anatomical landmarks can be obscured or obliterated, and also in those areas of the nose bordering on the orbital margins and the skull base.”
