NHS Fife is currently in the process of implementing a new text messaging system to interact with patients awaiting an outpatient appointment or a non-urgent surgery.

As part of a phased roll-out of an additional feature of our Patient Hub online portal, a text message was due to be sent to a defined group of patients on our waiting list. This message was intended to gather information regarding any change in symptoms since their hospital referral.

An error in the trial of this new process meant that this text message was sent to a larger group of patients than planned. All of those who received a text message are currently awaiting either an outpatient appointment or a non-urgent procedure.

A further text message was sent yesterday to the affected patients to acknowledge the error and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Patients who received the text message should be assured that the issue will not affect their position on any waiting list.

We remain committed to ensuring regular and continued dialogue with patients awaiting clinical appointments and procedures, and using technology to facilitate these interactions as part of our efforts to improve patient experience and minimise waiting times.
