The aim of the national shingles vaccination programme is to protect those most at risk from shingles
and its complications. Although shingles can occur at any age, the risk and severity of shingles
increases with age and is high in individuals who are severely immunosuppressed. NHS Fife will start to call people in the relevant eligibility cohorts up for vaccinations from June 2024.
Up until now, the vaccine used was called Zostavax, which is a live vaccine. People with certain health conditions, such as a severely weakened immune system, cannot receive a live vaccine and could not receive Zostavax.
