In the run up to this year's Diabetes Week, we want to help shine a light on the regular health checks that people need when they have diabetes.
If you have diabetes and are over 18 you should ensure that your 9 health checks are completed.
- Blood glucose - Have your blood glucose levels measured at least once a year to help you set a suitable level.
- BMI (weight) - Have your weight checked and if required get individual dietary advice and support to maintain healthy weight.
- Blood pressure - Have your blood pressure checked at least once a year and agree a suitable personal target.
- Smoking status - Be asked your smoking status and, if you smoke, receive support and advice on how to quit.
- Diabetic Eye Screening - Have your eyes screened by your local Diabetic Eye Screening team when you are called to attend
- Urinary Albumin Test - Have urine test to check for protein - a possible sign of kidney problems.
- Foot risk - Check your feet daily for any breaks in the skin and seek help if any concerns. If you are low risk, have your feet checked (including the skin, circulation and nerve supply) every 2 years. People who are moderate or high risk should be reviewed annually.
- Total Cholesterol - Have your blood fats measured and set realistic and achievable targets.
- Creatinine - Have your blood sample taken to measure kidney function.
