Following a competitive recruitment process, NHS Fife is pleased to announce the appointment of Gillian McAuley as its new Director of Nursing. Gillian will assume the role on 1st July 2025, succeeding the current Director of Nursing, Janette Keenan, who announced earlier this year her intention to retire after a distinguished career in the NHS.

Gillian brings 38 years of nursing experience to the role. Currently as the Acute Nurse Director at NHS Lothian, she has led the transformation of Nursing and Midwifery Care through the design of a strategic plan, the implementation of a patient-to-board governance framework, and the integration of digital solutions to support care delivery. Previously, she held senior professional leadership roles at NHS Lanarkshire, where she fronted the development of advanced practice after training as a nurse at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow. Gillian is an advocate for person-centred care and compassionate leadership, a Quality and Safety Fellow, and a graduate of the Oxford University Executive Leadership Programme. Additionally, she engages in research as a Senior Research Fellow at Queen Margaret University.

NHS Fife Chief Executive, Carol Potter welcomed Gillian to the NHS Fife team;

“We are delighted to welcome Gillian as NHS Fife’s new Director of Nursing. Gillian brings a wealth of experience and her expertise will be invaluable as we work to continue to provide high-quality care to the people of Fife.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Janette Keenan for her outstanding contribution to NHS Fife and the wider NHS in Scotland during a long standing career in Nursing, spanning over 45 years in variety of roles across NHS Scotland.

"Janette joined NHS Fife in 2002 as deputy director of nursing in acute services and was appointed as Director of Nursing in 2021 during the Covid 19 pandemic, her leadership, expertise, and commitment was instrumental in guiding us through the complex nursing challenges during and post-pandemic. We wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”

Gillian McAuley on acknowledging her appointment:

“It is a real privilege to be appointed as director of nursing for NHS Fife and I am proud to be able to lead such a wonderful and dedicated team of healthcare professionals.

“I look forward to working with my new colleagues across the organisation and I am committed to ensuring NHS Fife’s values remain at the heart of everything we do, supporting the delivery of excellent care for the people of Fife.”

Janette Keenan will continue in her role until July 2025, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity in leadership during this important period for NHS Fife.
