Induction Process for Doctors in Training

Welcome to the Induction process for doctors in training.  Most changeovers occur on one of the 4 main Induction Days on the first Wednesday of August, December, February and April each year.

 

There are 3 sections of Induction:-

 

  1. The Trainee Doctors Corporate Induction held in the morning of the key 4 dates.
  2. SES VIP (Virtual Induction Passport) – online Doctors LearnPro modules on statutory training bespoke to the doctor in training via http://doctors.learnprouk.com
  3. Departmental Induction held either immediately after the TDCI (e.g. Medicine specialties) or as soon as possible thereafter which includes information from the rota-masters as well as orientation.

 

 

Trainee Doctors Corporate Induction

 

We look forward to welcoming you to NHS Fife and the Trainee Doctors Corporate Induction (TDCI) which is organised for all doctors new to NHS Fife or returning after more than a year of last having worked here. 

 

Getting Here

 

The TDCI will be held in the Education Centre, Victoria Hospital, Hayfield Road, Kirkcaldy Fife KY2 5AH.

 

Driving

 

If driving, follow the A92 to Kirkcaldy and head towards the car park at the top of Whyteman’s Brae for the induction (details about car parking follows).

 

From the Southleave the A92 at junction Kirkcaldy West/Cardenden take the right down the A910 through a mini roundabout to the chapel roundabout take the 2nd exit (passing the retail park) and follow along chapel level passing through 3 roundabouts and passing by Kirkcaldy crematorium and Kirkcaldy High School.  At the set of traffic lights after the School, at the top of Whyteman’s Brae (Ambulance Station) – turn left and park in the car park first right.  Then walk down Whyteman’s Brae to the Hospital entering at Hayfield Road Entrance (Phase 1).

 

From the Northleave the A92 at Kirkcaldy East/Centre A921 to the Gallatown roundabout and take the 3rd exit along Dunnikier Way, passing Mitchelston Industrial Estate to your right (Finance Services are in there); and then take the 2nd exit at the ASDA roundabout.  You will have Dunnikier Residential Park (was a caravan park at one time) to you right and Dunnikier park/House Hotel also on your right and at the first set of traffic lights take a left down Whyteman’s Brae (Ambulance Station on your left) and take the first right into the Whyteman’s Brae car park.  Then walk down Whyteman’s Brae to the Hospital entering at Hayfeild Road Entrance (Phase 1).

 

Hayfield Road Entrance From here in Phase 1 Level 1, there are signposts to the TDCI but follow the yellow tape on the floor to Phase 2 lifts/stairs and come up one level to level 2.

 

Education Centreis to the right as you enter the floor where you will be greeted by one of the Medical Education Services Team for registration.

 

Public Transport

 

Kirkcaldy Train Stationis about a 40 minute walk to the Victoria Hospital.  There are frequent trains from Edinburgh (Fife Circle) and from Dundee.  Exit via Platform 2 side (travelling north side) and walk up to Forth Avenue onto Bennochy Road, downhill down Henry Road to a roundabout beside some shops (Valentes Chip Shop) take a right down Wilson Avenue and cross at the lights to Lauder Road passing the Co-op. Enter Victoria Hospital at Phase 3 – the new entrance though a rotating doorway and follow the signs to TDCI which is turn left into Phase 2 (you are on level 0), passing WH Smith and Costa, and up 2 levels to Level 2.

 

Busesare frequent from Kirkcaldy Train Station to Victoria Hospital or from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee.  Check out Stagecoach for details.  There are 2 bus stops at Victoria Hospital.  One on Hayfield Road where you will enter the hospital via phase 1 Hayfield Road Entrance and one at the front of Phase 3 where you were enter the hospital via the rotating door.

 

Registration

 

You will be welcomed by a member of NHS Fife Medical Education Services – be asked to sign in, check your NHS.net email address, collect a Temporary Doctors Swipe Card and check to see you have the correct ID card holder.  You will collect a copy of the Induction Talks timetable (just in case there are any changes), a copy of the Skin Integrity Form to complete and take to Room 4, and a copy of the Information Systems (IS) Training Schedule (speak to Alex Mackay if you need assistance). 

 

You will already have your pack emailed to you – remember to print and bring with you:-

 

  • Completed IT SARF form – signed and security information completed.  Take this to Room 2 to exchange for you access to logins and passwords.  Room 2 is kitted out with laptops for you to test your logins.
  • Clinical Skills Survey Form – complete and hand into Room 1 and view teaching opportunities available.Contact June direct on ext 21642 or email juneadamson@nhs.net.

 

Induction Displays  

There are a number of displays regarding Induction and the hospital; medical education; projects; library services and pharmacy education in the Education Centre.  Please check these boards.

 

Department Induction  

It is very important that you attend Departmental Induction if you have never worked in that Department before.  You should have been sent information about the date, time and place from your rota-master or educational supervisor.  Some might follow immediately after the TDCI e.g. Medicine.

 

Virtual Induction Passport 

The Virtual Induction Passport (VIP) is created by the DMEs for Fife, Lothian and Borders as the Doctors LearnPro – http://doctors.learnprouk.com.  Please remember to check that your location and any other details updated.  Also check to ensure that you have completed the modules that may have expired or ones you have yet to finish.  Note that you should view additional modules via the generic NHS Fife modules or national ones.
