What do we do?

Each ward has a team of staff led by a Senior Charge Nurse who has 24 hour responsibility. Learning Disability nursing aims to prevent ill health and assist and strengthen well being. Nurses work with individual residents to:

  • Promote health
  • Offer choice
  • Increase social skills and promote self help skills
  • Manage epilepsy
  • Promote continence
  • Ensure correct posture
  • Encourage access and involvement in the community
  • Maintain nutrition, including weight gain and loss
  • Manage stress and promote mental health
  • Monitor side effects of medication
  • Promote dental care and personal hygiene
  • Prevent and manage challenging behaviour
  • Promote sleep and rest

Nurses work closely with other members of the multi-professional team:

  • Dietetics
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Clinical Pharmacy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Podiatry
  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Art Therapy

Staff provide a period of hospital admission for admission/treatment of mental health/behavioural needs which cannot be supported at home.

Some in-patient admissions may be voluntary and others are under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2003. This process will involve Doctors and Mental Health Officers making an application and recommendation that you should be in hospital for assessment and treatment.
