VOLUNTEERING in NHS FIFE

A volunteer is: “A person who gives freely and willingly of their time to help improve the health and wellbeing of patients, carers and users of Scotland’s NHS.” (Strategy for volunteering in the NHS in Scotland CEL 10 (2008)

Volunteers can make a huge difference to the lives of our patients. Volunteering can contribute to raising individual self-esteem, self-confidence and the development of skills as well as to the regeneration of local communities and to society as a whole. NHS Fife has almost 300 volunteers working across sites throughout Fife. There are also a number of volunteers working through other organisations such as the Royal Voluntary Service and the Red Cross.   Volunteers also participate in patient focus and public involvement activities.

NHS Fife’s Volunteering Policy is a document that formally acknowledges and supports the role of volunteers and includes a set of principles to encourage and enable the involvement of volunteers from all sections of the community without discrimination. The Policy also covers NHS Fife’s commitment to provide information and training, what NHS Fife can expect from a volunteer, and, more importantly, what a volunteer can expect from NHS Fife.

NHS Fife first achieved the Investing in Volunteers Award in 2010.  The Award is valid for three years and was re-accredited for a further three years in 2013.   NHS Fife are currently seeking their 3rd accreditation of IiV.   We will keep you informed of our progress.

If as a member of  staff you are thinking of, or would simply like to find out how to involve volunteers in their ward or department, please contact one of the Voluntary Service Managers/Co-ordinator who will be able to give you advice on the process.    Their contact details are listed below.

If as a member of the public you would like to find out more information on how to become a volunteer and join our team then please contact one of the Voluntary Service Managers/Co-ordinator, their details are listed below.

People volunteer for an endless variety of reasons.   Some want to gain experience, acquire new skills, meet new people or expand their knowledge of the NHS as a way to a new job or career.    Others just want to give back to their community.   Whatever the reason, each volunteer brings something special and unique and, collectively, our volunteers build a highly important and effective team.
