
Course Description
This programme is for Registered Healthcare Practitioners (Nurses/Midwives/AHPs) band 5 and above who require support for service improvement or develop/review knowledge in relation to the administration of medicines. The aim of this session is examine the issues surrounding the safer administration of medicines, highlighting the work of national agencies and programmes in the reduction of medication errors i.e. Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP).
The learning outcomes within this programme are:
- Discuss NHS Fife’s organisational responsibilities in reducing harm to patients
- Discuss NHS Fife’s Safe and Secure Use of Medicines Policy and Procedure (SSUMPP)
- Demonstrate the procedures set for the safe administration of medicines
- Understand the importance of preventing missed doses
- Discuss the importance of correct medication calculations
- Explain the difference between Oxycodone and Morphine
- Understand the importance of correct handling, storage and destruction of controlled drugs
- Have an awareness of the Supply, Storage and Disposal/Return of medication
- Discuss the most common medication errors and how to avoid them
- Recognise the need to report, review and learn from medication incidents
- Summarise your professional responsibilities in promoting a safety culture around medicines administration
