Health Promotion, look to cultivate a Fife where the youth view non-smoking as the social norm. The team aims to promote a culture where the youth are not tempted to experiment with smoking and encourage their peers to make positive lifestyle changes, support each other to quit, are aware of tobacco industry business, and have an active voice in health policy and practice.
Educational programmes
To achieve this we have worked with our partners in education to develop tobacco education programmes for primary schools (SmokeFactor) and secondary schools (Smoke Free Class). These programmes of activity run annually and ensure our young people have a clear understanding of tobacco issues and are confident to share it.
The competition is an excellent way to support our young people and is invaluable in our PSE programme - one of the best initiatives which works with our young people
Excellent, I loved it! I learned so much. Keep doing what you are doing it is awesome!
Collaborative projects
Each year we look at collaborative projects that focus on new and innovative ways to engage our young people on the topic of tobacco, or improve understanding of the impact that tobacco has on our society as a whole.
Projects range from a small grants project with YOUTH 1st aimed at exploring youth engagement on tobacco issues (PREVENT project) to an accredited Health and Wellbeing course with Fife College.
This has been a fantastic project to raise awareness of the health issues around smoking, to mark No Smoking Day and to give our students valuable experience. The event was a great success and proved popular with students and staff on campus - we look forward to supporting further health promotion initiatives in the future.
Secondhand smoke and the protection of children
We want to protect children and young people from exposure to secondhand smoke, reducing their risk of respiratory infections, severe asthma, wheezing, middle ear infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by encouraging smokers to make a pledge not to smoke inside the home.
The Smoke Free Homes programme provides information and advice on how to make that commitment (Pledge Form). For more information or advice contact us on 0800 389 1603 or email fife.smokefreehomes@nhs.scot.
Training
We provide tobacco related training within the Health Promotion Training Programme and loan out tobacco related resources through HP Information and Resources Centre (IRC).
If you want to find out more about educational programmes, tobacco related training or awareness raising initiatives, email us at fife.smokefreefife@nhs.scot.
