Nutrition and clinical dietetics

Dietitians are experts in nutrition. They apply science and evidence to your individual circumstances. They aim to prevent or treat disease and improve your health and wellbeing. They will work with you to explore what matters to you most. They will create a plan that will support you to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices. All our dietitians are dedicated professionals who are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The nutrition and clinical dietetics service has specialist dietitians who offer dietetic treatment in the areas of:

Adults’ and children’s/ young peoples’ acute services (Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy & Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline)

Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
Child healthy weight (Fife Loves Life)

Referral routes

Community referrals

Community Referrals to the dietetic department are made via SCI-Gateway, from a consultant, GP, other Health Care Professionals and occasionally a self referral by the patient. Once the referral is received, if appropriate, a letter is sent to the person referred, parent, carer or next of kin asking them to make an appointment at an appropriate clinic/ward area. People referred then have one month in which to book their first appointment.

Acute (hospital inpatient) referrals

Acute (hospital inpatient) referrals are managed via the acute hospital services.
All requests for assistance will be triaged and may lead to signposting to other services, telephone or video consultations, or face to face appointments.

What to expect

Following referral, we will have an initial conversation with you. We will ask you questions about your eating and drinking habits and if there has been any recent changes in your weight to help assess your nutritional status. We will then work with you to explore what matters to you most. A plan will be formed that will support you to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices, to help treat or prevent disease. We aim to provide accessible information when needed. We tailor our advice to meet the needs of the individual. The type of appointment may vary according to your needs and may be any of the following:

All requests for assistance will be triaged and may lead to signposting to other services.
