Laboratory Medicine is part of the Women, Children and Clinical Services Directorate
within the Acute Services Division of NHS Fife. Laboratory Medicine consists of four laboratory departments:
› Clinical Biochemistry
› Cellular Pathology (Cytopathology, Histopathology and Mortuary Services)
› Haematology with Blood Transfusion
› Microbiology and Infection Control.
Laboratory Medicine is led by a Laboratory Director and is managed by a Laboratory Services Manager and each Department is led by a Medical Consultant or a Consultant Grade Clinical Scientist. Service Managers (Biomedical Scientist) manage combinations of the departments as follows:
› Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology with Blood Transfusion
› Cellular Pathology (Histopathology, Cytopathologyand Mortuary Services)
› Microbiology and Clinical Immunology.
Accreditation
Each of the 4 laboratory disciplines is accredited to ISO 15189:2022 as assessed by the United Kindom Accreditation Service (UKAS). Please be advised that in certain instances results of investigations, opinions and interpretations expressed in laboratory reports may be outside the scope of the Departments’ UKAS accreditation. A list of accredited or non-accredited tests used by the laboratory is available on request. Each Department’s scope of accreditation can be found on the UKAS website (www.ukas.com).
